This technique changed everything!
My first year of homeschooling was 2003, and by the end of the first semester my kids were BORED with textbook social studies - and I was too!!
We tried to find history videos online, and watched documentaries on cable. This didn't make anything better. But one day, something just clicked!
Here's what happened ….
One kid was in a social studies unit and was assigned to read a book about the Salem Witch Trials (remember, we were doing "grade levels" our first year!) Simultaneously, another kid was in a unit about the Civil War. Well, I remembered that we had some family who were involved in those witch hunts and their account is quite different than the textbooks. I also remembered about some interesting Civil War stories that will never be found in textbooks. After sharing these stories, suddenly history become relevant! My kids were engaged, asking questions, and wanted to know more.
From that point forward, we ditched the textbooks and everything about social studies became personal and it was a huge success.
